Chickens

We love our chickens! Our hens all live in a large 12×16 mobile coop inside of a 6,724 sq ft pen. The pen is made of electrified poultry netting and it can be moved daily. When the hens go into the coop at night, we hitch it to the truck and move them to a new spot on the farm. The electric fencing keeps predators out and allows the hens fresh grass and bugs daily. An 85lb Great Pyrenees named Comet helps deter predators – land or air.

There are some roosters allowed with the hens, but only the most polite, gentle roosters. The other roosters get the run of the barn area and sleep with a 125lb Great Pyrenees as their security guard.

Some of the breeds we have are Cream Legbars, Easter Eggers, Barred Rocks, Leghorns, Australorps, Sebrights, Calico Princess, Black Stars, Rhode Island Reds, Silver Wyandottes, Golden Wyandottes, Olive Eggers, and more. We do have large pens that we put specific chickens in when we want to hatch pure breeds.

Cattle

British White cattle can be traced back to the 17th century. They are a beef breed and are great for home or commercial production. These cows are naturally polled, meaning they don’t have horns. They are also amazingly docile but have kind of snobby attitudes. They are very heat and cold-tolerant and fit right into our hot, humid southwest Louisiana climate.

We also have Jersey cows for milking and raising calves. They produce a2/a2 milk and are on a grass-fed diet for the cleanest, healthiest milk possible.

In Louisiana, it is illegal to sell raw milk for consumption, but it is legal to buy into a milk/cow share for anyone who also enjoys raw dairy products. We use this creamy raw milk for cooking and to make butter, ice cream, and cheese. Our farm cats, dogs, and chickens love raw milk and enjoy it as a treat!

Pumpkins

Pumpkins are available starting in September.

We have:

Jack O’ Lantern – perfect for carving and decoration

Jarradhale – gray/blue skin, perfect for decoration and eating

White – large and mini

Porcelain Princess – pink, deeply ribbed, very pretty, great flavor

Musquee De Provence – large and beautiful, perfect for cooking

And lots more!

Horses

We wouldn’t be Mad Horse Farms without horses! Horses are what started the whole thing. I grew up on horseback, riding and barrel racing. I’ve never not had a horse, even as a baby! We have American Quarter Horses and use them for trail riding and barrel racing.
